What is Clozapine? Sold under the trade name Clozaril, Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic. It is mainly used for schizophrenia that does not improve after using other antipsychotic drugs. Patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder may reduce the incidence of suicidal behavior. It is more effective than typical antipsychotics and works well for those who are effective. FUNCTION AND APPLICATION
Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic and is mainly used in people who are unresponsive or intolerant to other antipsychotic drugs. This means they do not respond satisfactorily to at least two different antipsychotics. It has been shown to be more effective in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia than typical antipsychotics, with more pronounced in patients who are not well treated with other drugs.
In a 2013 study comparing the efficacy of 15 antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia, clozapine ranked first and showed very high efficacy. 25% more effective than amisulpride (2nd) and 33% more effective than 3rd (3rd), with double the effect of haloperidol, quetiapine, and aripiprazole.
However, the efficacy of clozapine is not reflected in measures of global function, at least in the short term, such as the ability to leave the hospital and maintain a career. The recurrence rate is low, patients are better tolerated. There is some evidence that clozapine may reduce the abuse of drugs in people with schizophrenia.
For schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease, this may be better than other antipsychotics.
Clozapine is not recommended for treating behavioral problems in people with Alzheimer's disease.
